CHAPTER TWENTY NINE
OâReilly drove slowly to the hospital. He wasnât in any rush to get there to give Harry Vernon the news that not only was his daughter dead, he was suspected of killing her. He passed the Football Club on the right and drove into Beaucamps. The hospital was situated on a quiet street in the west of the suburb.
OâReilly knew something was wrong the moment he turned into the car park and stopped outside the entrance. Two police cars were parked directly in front of the main door. He got out of the car and approached them. Harry Vernon was sitting in the back of one of them. His head was resting on the window and his eyes were closed. OâReilly wasnât even sure if he was awake or not.
A PC came out of the hospital and walked over to OâReilly. âMorning, sir. Heâs in a bit of a state but we managed to get him into the back in the end.â
âWhat the hell is going on here?â OâReilly said.
âWe were told to come and arrest him, sir.â
âWho told you that?â
âOrders from the Super I suppose.â
OâReilly was furious. âYou suppose? The man is deeply traumatised. His wife and daughter have been murdered, and you suppose?â
âWe were just following orders, sir.â
OâReilly walked back to his car and slammed his hands on the roof. He knew he shouldnât take it out on the young PC but he was livid. He hadnât been looking forward to breaking the news to Harry Vernon then arresting him, but he knew it was the right thing to do. And now Harry had been thrown into the back of a police car by two faceless officers in uniform. He calmed down a bit and walked back to the police car.
âWhere are his clothes?â he asked the PC. âThe clothes he was wearing last night need to be collected and sent to Forensics immediately.â
âDonât know, sir,â the PC replied. âWe were just told to come and get him.â
âThis is an absolute balls-up,â OâReilly said. âA real fekkin balls-up.â
* * *
OâReilly didnât even bother to knock on Superintendent Hayesâ door. He stormed into the office.
âWhat the hell is going on?â
She was speaking to someone on the phone. Her eyes widened and she cupped her hand over the receiver. She frowned at OâReilly and took her hand off the phone.
âIâm going to have to call you back,â she said and ended the call.
âWhat the hell is going on?â OâReilly said again. âI went to pick up Harry Vernon only to find Iâd been beaten to it. I offered to do it.â
âI didnât know that,â Superintendent Hayes said. âAnd I will appreciate it in future if you would knock before you come barging into my office.â
âI made it very clear during the briefing that I would be the one to arrest Harry Vernon,â OâReilly said. âAnd nobody had any objections. So why the hell did I find him thrown into the back of a patrol car like a common criminal?â
âMr Vernon is a suspect in a triple murder investigation.
